Will my child learn English & Spanish at the school?
As a British school, English is the official language for all teaching and activities. We aim to ensure that all students receive outstanding support to become fluent in English. Our team of British-qualified teachers implements the England and Wales national curriculum to enhance students' language proficiency, fostering confident bilingualism.
Additionally, our students learn Spanish to a native level. Spanish-speaking students have a minimum number of weekly Spanish classes (the number and frequency of lessons varies based on their age group). Non-Spanish speakers will learn Spanish as a foreign language throughout their educational journey.
What languages are taught at the school?
As a UK curriculum school, our students receive full English language immersion from the early years to Year 11 to ensure native-level fluency. The curriculum is delivered in English and all activities are conducted in this language. Spanish is taught across all year groups.
In line with our commitment to preparing children for global opportunities, we also offer French classes from Year 5 to the IGCSE. French, German and Chinese are also available as extracurricular options during lunchtimes.
What courses are taught by Spanish teachers?
The British National Curriculum is taught by qualified, UK-trained teachers except for some of our language teachers. Those who deliver the Spanish language and Spanish validation courses are qualified, native Spanish teachers.
Does King’s College School accept pupils with little or no English?
We take children with no English between the ages of 2 and 4. For a limited number of pupils between the ages of 7 and 14, we offer the Intensive English Programme or English as an Additional Language Programme. This is a special course for non-English speaking newcomers of proven academic ability, whose entry to King’s College School would not otherwise be possible. It has an additional charge per term as stated in our Fee Schedule. They receive intensive English classes in very small groups and individual support is provided in mainstream lessons. From the age of 10 onwards, however, it is recommended that new pupils have a high level of English to enter the school.
What language do the pupils speak in the playground?
English is the language of instruction in the classroom, and our UK-qualified teachers offer exceptional English tuition from the early years to IGCSE.
In the school playground, students speak in both English and Spanish. This is particularly beneficial for new students, as it helps them rapidly improve their language skills in both languages. The school provides excellent language support for students to become bilingual.
How well do new international pupils adapt to the school?
Pupils at King’s College School, La Moraleja are used to welcoming newcomers and are very friendly and helpful. The Heads of the different departments make sure that “buddies” are always on hand to show newcomers the ropes at first. However, much depends on the attitude of the new student and how willing they are to make new friends and participate in activities as a member of the school community.
What is the ratio of international pupils at the school?
We have a diverse student body with 58 nationalities. With approximately 900 students in total, local Spanish pupils make up about 50% of the student body, followed by British students who are the second most represented nationality. We also have North American pupils and students from various other parts of the world.
Is it possible to study at King’s College for one term only?
We are happy to welcome exchange students from Inspired Education Group schools for both short-term (less than eight weeks) and long-term stays. Apart from this, we usually require students to commit to a minimum of one or two full academic years. The latter case applies to the IGCSE course in Years 10 and 11, which is a two-year programme.
