Learn More About the IGCSE
Choosing Subject Options at IGCSE
Universities increasingly look at the GCSE/IGCSE profile of applicants. Therefore, pupils should select optional subjects that reflect their true interests and abilities, rather than choosing a subject based on its perceived importance. This approach will demonstrate they have a wide range of skills and provide a greater chance of achieving the best possible grades, enabling them to develop their true potential.
IGCSE Grading System
Our IGCSE curriculum follows the Pearson Edexcel Examination Board, which uses a 9-1 grading system (9 being the highest grade) to assess all work. IGCSE grades are awarded to students in August following examination and coursework submission.
More informationIGCSE Assessment
Assessment criteria for the IGCSE course will vary depending on the subject. Most subjects require students to sit one or more written exam papers, while language courses entail oral examinations as well.
The IGCSE assessment guidelines will determine the protocol for practical examinations, namely in Drama and Physical Education.
Students may also be required to present a coursework portfolio as part of the end-of-year IGCSE review process, as is the case of Art & Design.
IGCSE Teachers
Our IGCSE teachers are highly qualified, holding degrees and master's in education from prestigious universities in the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge. They are experts in the subjects they teach, possessing comprehensive knowledge of both the IGCSE curriculum and assessment criteria across all academic levels.
Delivering engaging and challenging lessons, our teaching staff prepare students to excel in their International General Certificate for Secondary Education examinations, establishing a strong basis for success in Sixth Form (IB Diploma Programme or A Levels) and higher education. Our team is always available to support students to reach their full potential and achieve excellent results across subjects.
How is the IGCSE qualification useful?
IGCSE qualifications are recognised and valued by universities and employers worldwide, offering students extraordinary opportunities for further study and career progression in many countries. It is a valuable secondary certificate that indicates a depth and breadth of understanding across a wide range of disciplines.
What Is the Difference Between GCSE & IGCSE?
IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is the international equivalent of the UK GCSE qualification, available in many international schools around the world. IGCSEs are globally-respected high school qualifications and act as the gateway to further academic study in the UK and beyond.
IGCSE Qualifications: Cambridge & Pearson Edexcel
Both Cambridge International and Edexcel IGCSEs are highly-regarded international high school qualifications.
Our IGCSE school in La Moraleja offers the Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs, globally recognised qualifications with academic content and assessment designed specifically for international learners in Years 10 and 11. International GCSEs are part of iProgress, the complete series of Pearson Edexcel academic qualifications for 5 to 19-year-olds in international schools.
Further Study post-IGCSE
The IGCSE provides a highly respected international qualification and is a great foundation for further study, including A Levels and the IB Diploma Programme, but also for higher education in top universities in Spain and abroad. Both A Levels and the IBDP programmes are offered at our sister school in El Soto de Viñuelas. Our students progress directly to Soto after completing Year 11 at our school.
Entry Requirements
Pupils applying for admission to Year 11 must have studied the first year of the (I)GCSE course (Year 10) in the British system the year before they enter King’s College. The (I)GCSE examination boards in their current school must coincide with the examination boards used at King’s College.
Children cannot join Year 11 at our school if they have not studied Year 10 in the British education system. In these circumstances, King’s College would study each case individually and recommend the best option for the applicant.
