Secondary School Subjects

All students must study English Language, Mathematics, Science, Spanish Language & Literature and Social Sciences. Students of non-Spanish nationality study Spanish as a second language, whereas students of Spanish nationality validate their studies by following courses in Spanish Language, Literature and Social Sciences, according to the requirements of the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Secondary pupils have a certain degree of freedom to choose further subjects they prefer, and we guide them in selecting the disciplines which will be most useful and adequate for their future university course and career aspirations, especially at the IGCSE level. Nine or ten IGCSE exams are taken at the end of this stage (Year 11) for the different subjects.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9) Programme

All students in Key Stage 3 follow a rich, balanced and varied programme based on the British National Curriculum alongside the compulsory Spanish subjects for native speakers. Delivered by specialist teachers, our academic programme is rigorous whilst also allowing our students to work independently, developing important skills for IGCSE study.

When compared to the English National curriculum, we offer additional elements, such as the introduction of separate sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) in Year 9, and the option to study three modern languages (French, Spanish, and German).

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) Programme

When students move into Key Stage 4, in Years 10 and 11, they continue with the same curriculum, but with a focus on subject specialisms to prepare them for their IGCSE examinations. They choose optional subjects to complement their study of English, Mathematics and the Sciences, which allows them to build a tailored academic portfolio with the guidance of our experienced staff. At this stage, students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning whilst engaging in a range of different tasks during lessons.

Assessment at Secondary School

Students are assessed internally using the King’s Group assessment model. This is based on the 9-1 grading system linked to IGCSE studies and allows the school to track progress from Years 7-11. A range of formative assessment tools are used to identify strengths and weaknesses in students’ performance. Teaching is then catered to the relative needs of the individuals in each class, ensuring that they are ready to excel in their official IGCSE examinations at the end of Year 11.
